![]() Prison Ministry
The Prison Ministry focuses on ministering to prisoners at the Prince George's Correctional Center. These prisoners are correctly called inmates or detainees, and not prisoners. Generally inmates or detainees are held in the Correctional Center for short periods of time, about one year or less, while prisoners are held in the State or Federal jails for periods exceeding one year. The National Wesleyan Church Prison Ministry team consists of three members: Ann-Marie Hutchinson, Tony Walker and Esmond Sydney. The team visits the PG Correctional Center once monthly, on the third Sunday of the month. A minimum of two members are required for each visit. For security reasons, one team member alone is not advised to visit the Center. At the Center, there is freedom to teach a bible class to the detainees in the unit that has been assigned to the team, or the team is free to spend the time holding a church service. The chaplain asked that the teams teach and preach Jesus Christ only rather that any particular denomination. The chaplain serves under the umbrella of the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, an organization which trains chaplains. There are about four hundred volunteers who serve. For more information please contact Pastor Esmond Sydney personally or email him at pastorsydney@national-wesleyan.org. |
